The Last Martian

(Written November 2010)

This was written for a Flash Fiction competition in New Scientist magazine. I wrote this story after I felt the first attempt didn't fit the competition theme of Forgotten Futures closely enough. I quite like the idea of this alternative Earth / Martian history, though not necessarily the way it might turn out as I imagined it.

It didn't win, but I doubt the other story Hover Bother would have either. Oh well, I can at least daydream that perhaps Neil Gaiman has read one of my stories, even if it wasn't good enough to win the competition (and assuming it wasn't just rejected by the editors first - but hey - this is my daydream...)
